About the event

Creating Characters from Watercolor Blobs

In this kids' class, we will explore the imaginative world of watercolor and illustration by transforming simple watercolor blobs into unique characters. Each participant will visualize their own interpretation, leading to a diverse range of characters.

Materials Needed (to be supplied)

  • Watercolor paints

  • Watercolor paper

  • Brushes (various sizes)

  • Illustration pens or markers

  • Pencil and eraser

  • Water container

  • Paper towels

Steps to Create Characters

  1. Blob Creation: Start by randomly applying watercolor to your paper, allowing the colors to blend and form organic shapes.

  2. Observation: Once the blobs are dry, observe the shapes and see what characters they resemble. This could be animals, people, or fantastical creatures.

  3. Character Development: Choose a blob that inspires you and begin to sketch out features, adding eyes, mouths, and limbs using a pencil.

  4. Inking: Once satisfied with your sketch, use illustration pens or markers to outline your character, adding details and personality.

  5. Coloring: Optionally, add more watercolor or colored pencils to enhance your character and make it pop!

Visualizing the Possibilities

Each blob can become a myriad of characters depending on the viewer's perspective. Here are some examples of what children might see:

  • A blob resembling a friendly monster with big eyes and a smile.

  • A colorful fish with flowing fins and vibrant scales.

  • A whimsical bird with exaggerated feathers and a playful stance.

  • A fantastical creature with multiple limbs and unique patterns.

  • A character inspired by a favorite storybook or movie.

Conclusion

This exercise not only encourages creativity but also teaches children to see the world through different lenses. The possibilities are endless, and every character will be a reflection of each child's imagination!
